The concept of internet radio was initiated up by Carl Malamud. He in 1993 launched an “Internet Talk Show” which was the first internet radio show. But in 1995 the internet radio got its present form and till then the files were not present in a multi-cast fashion but were distributed one by one.

In November 1994 Rolling Stones had a concert which was distributed on internet in multi-cast fashion. On November 7, 1994 the first official radio station was introduced and was known as Ibiblio. It was Ibiblio which originated the concept of streams.

In 1995 many commercial internet radios were launched such as NetRadio. NetRadio then was streaming more than 100 channels. In 2002 USA intervened in the process of development of internet radio and formed a panel known as Copyright Arbitration Royalty Panel (CARP).

All internet radio companies have to pay royalties to CARP. CARP gave a commercial build-up to the internet radio. All the inter radio channel in US were charged by CARP and a heavy fee was levied. The amount of fee collected even exceeded those collected from traditional radio. As a result of this, many of the small companies decided to move out of USA to places where there is no royalty charged. Today there are millions of people who are addicted to internet radio.
